Chayanne brings Latin pop to Amway

So far, there has been a lot more basketball than bands in the new Amway Center, but the options have been choice for fans of Latin music.

First, there was the opening-night mariachi marathon of Vicente Fernandez, the renowned ranchera king of Mexico. And now, Puerto Rican pop star/heartthrob Chayanne brings his "No Hay Imposibles" tour to Orlando on Saturday for an Amway Center concert.

Compared with Fernandez's venerable combination of warbling trumpets and folk ballads, Chayanne's approach calls to mind teen-pop and Ricky Martin more than old-school tradition. Yet the guy has been around too long to be considered part of any fad.

His career started in 1979, as an 11-year-old member of Puerto Rican boy-band Los Chicos. (If you're keeping score, that's about five years before Ricky Martin joined Menudo.) When Los Chicos bit the dust in the mid-1980s, Chayanne scuffled for a few years until his solo career took hold in 1989.

More than 20 years later, he's one of the most consistent stars in Latin music, with 25 gold and 30 platinum recordings on his resume. He's also known for his acting roles in telenovelas, an outlet that also has been a promotional tool for his music. "Me enamoré de ti," the first single off Chayanne's "No Hay Imposibles" album, is the theme song of the telenovela "Corazón salvaje."
